Living Literate Lives

A 21st Century Perspective

Welcome to our Ning!

We are glad you have chosen to visit (and possibly join) our Ning. We are a collection of educators interested in helping others lead literate lives.

What is a Ning? It is a place where people with common interests can come together as a learning community to discuss topics, reflect and write about those topics in blog posts, and collaborate with colleagues.

The Educause Learning Initiative has an informative flyer that discusses how Nings can be used in education. The link below leads directly to their flyer, but take some time to check out their other flyers about Web 2.0 tools!

HOW I WILL SHARE WHAT I HAVE LEARNED.

I HAVE CERTAINLY LEARNED A LOT FROM THIS BOOK.I HAVE TOLD THE TEACHERS AND MY STUDENTS THINGS WE HAVE LEARNED AS WE STUDIED EACH CHAPTER, BUT I KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO SINCE STUDYING THESE LAST FEW CHAPTERS. I NEED TO SUMMARIZE THEM FOR MY STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AND LIST ALL THE ACCOMMODATIONS SO THEY WILL HAVE THEM TO REFER TO. IT COULD MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR THEM. I AM GOING TO TRY TO GET IT DONE THIS WEEKEND SO I CAN GIVE IT TO THEM AT THE ARDS NEXT WEEK.See More

Reflective blog 23

This chapter really hit home. We always put accomodations for extra time for my dyslexic students but I guess I didn't realize how important that extra time really is. It's also a catch 22 situation. Many of my students need the extra time and it is given to them but then it's time to turn the assignment in and the student still does not have it completed; it has made me wonder if giving them the extra time was hindering my students by falling behind but I see that having the extra time is a…See More

I am right there with you. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the day to day tasks. Sometimes I feel like a robot, just going through the motions. I have to say that I have done better about praising my students this year and what helped was that I…

Chapter 23

Pages 319-320 talk about digitally recorded textbooks. I know that in elementary we have books on tape as well as textbooks on CDROM but I never considered high school textbooks much less college textbooks being on CDROM. How awesome it that! The Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) library contains more than 90,000 books in all kinds of academic areas ranging from K-college. AND!!!! If they don't have the one you need they will record it upon request! AS soon as I read this I…See More

All students should be expected to rise for success and I get irritated to hear anyone is not doing what is best for any child. If a student is asking for help then there is a reason for it and they should be listened to and not ignored; there are…

It's good to know that other schools are using Lexia. I really like it for my kids and they really enjoy working with it. They love to show their friends how smart they are by using words they learn from the Greek and Latin prefix section of…

Chapter 22

Chapter 22 basically lays out what parents can do to encourage and nurture their dyslexic child. Dr. Shaywitz shares a number of specific steps parents can do to build their child's self-esteem. As a teacher of a student who is about to be tested for dyslexia I have earmarked this chapter so if need be I can share with my student's parents information that they and myself can share with the child. I absolutely want my students to know that many intelligent people have reading difficulties and…See More

Chapter 21

Dr. Shaywitz, you need to come to Holiman.Chapter 21 made me sad for students in public schools. How can anyone who teaches children in any form or fashion not do what is BEST for children and on top of it deny services and/or deny anything is wrong. And...as far as private schools go... I went to a private school for most of my school career. Let me tell you, it was not the kind of school for anyone with a learning disability. The teachers were not certified. If one did come, they didn't stay…See More
